How much gravel do you need?
Measure the length and width of the area, then enter the planned gravel depth. For an irregular space, split it into rectangles, calculate each section and add the volumes. Measure the gravel layer separately from any base material.
Length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324 = cubic yards
In metric units: length (m) × width (m) × depth (cm) ÷ 100 = cubic meters.
A worked example
A 20 ft × 12 ft area at 3 in deep needs 60 cubic feet, or 2.22 cubic yards. At the default density of 1,600 kg/m³, that is about 3.0 US tons before adding extra.
Gravel depth and coverage
Depth depends on the job and stone. Confirm the compacted-depth requirement with your supplier or installer.

Before you order
The extra allowance covers uneven ground and small measurement differences. It is not a compaction factor. For a driveway or structural base, ask your supplier how much loose material is needed to achieve the specified compacted depth.
