Measure the sand layer
Use the inside length and width of the space, then enter the intended sand depth. For a sandbox, leave the headroom you need rather than filling to the rim. For a layered project, calculate only the sand layer.
Length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324 = cubic yards
In metric units: length (m) × width (m) × depth (cm) ÷ 100 = cubic meters.
A worked example
A 2 m × 2 m sandbox filled 15 cm deep needs 0.60 cubic meters, or 0.78 cubic yards. At 1,600 kg/m³, that is about 0.96 metric tonnes before extra.

Play sand, building sand and other grades are not interchangeable for every job. Follow the product and installation specifications. Moisture and packing affect the delivered weight; the optional extra is not a prediction of compaction.
